Caleb University VC spreads anti-drug crusade with stage performance
Long before he became a university administrator, Prof. Asikhia had forged a reputation as a pioneer of Nigeria's evangelical drama movement.
He belongs to the generation of Christian drama ministers who transformed the theatre into a nationally recognised platform for evangelism, moral instruction and social re-engineering.
Over the years, he has worked alongside some of Nigeria's leading gospel drama ministers, including Evangelist Mike Bamiloye, founder of Mount Zion Faith Ministries International, and contributed to conferences, nationwide outreaches, television ministries and drama evangelism that shaped the country's vibrant Christian film industry.
The Vice-Chancellor’s immense contributions to the industry earned him the position of National President of the All Nigerian Conference of Evangelical Drama Ministers (ANCEDRAM), the apex umbrella body for evangelical drama practitioners in Nigeria.
Prof. Asikhia also founded the LATDEMS Film Village and Ministry Initiatives, a platform dedicated to talent discovery, scriptwriting, acting, leadership development, discipleship and faith-based media engagement.
Through the initiative, countless young people have been mentored and equipped with skills for purposeful living and value-driven leadership.
His belief in the transformative power of creative arts has remained a defining feature of his career. This philosophy was recently reflected in his acclaimed film production, “The Gracious Couple,” which was deployed as a national advocacy tool against examination malpractice and ethical decline.
Drawing from decades of experience as an evangelist, actor, producer, mentor and educator, Prof. Asikhia delivered an artistic tour de force that seamlessly combined entertainment with public health education.
The drama captivated the audience while conveying a compelling message on the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of responsible choices.
Observers described the performance as historic, noting that it may have established Prof. Asikhia as one of the first serving Vice-Chancellors in Nigeria to personally lead a major public advocacy campaign through live theatrical performance.
Prof. Asikhia, who welcomed the guests on behalf of the Founder of Caleb University, Dr. Oladega Adebogun, maintained that modern universities must go beyond teaching and research to serve as the moral conscience of society.
He warned that the emergence of synthetic narcotics and evolving trafficking networks presents new challenges requiring innovative responses and strategic collaboration among stakeholders.
He also commended the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for prioritising youth welfare and social development.
The Vice-Chancellor equally paid a glowing tribute to the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig.-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), for strengthening Nigeria's anti-drug architecture through robust enforcement, rehabilitation and awareness campaigns.
To ensure that the campaign delivers lasting institutional impact beyond ceremonial activities, Caleb University unveiled a comprehensive four-point action plan.
The framework commits the institution to promoting total abstinence from dangerous substances such as cocaine, cannabis and tramadol, reducing students' vulnerability to cultism and related social vices, and strengthening referral pathways to the University's specialised Counselling and Developmental Clinic.
Anchored on the slogan, "*A Drug-Free Child is the Pride of Parents," the initiative establishes a practical roadmap for prevention, intervention and behavioural change within the University community.
